the long way home

lately, brandon has been doing night show to fill in for other musicians. this means that he doesn't come home from work until about 9pm. sometimes ahonui will be asleep by that time...or sometimes ahonui is just not in the mood to wrap his arms around daddy's neck and give him - what? a great big kiss.

one night last week, brandon had our one car at work with him. i thought it would be beneficial for both myself and my little one to go on a walk to pcc's backstage and surprise daddy. i am constantly in desperate need of any physical activity, and ahonui needed to get some fresh air out of the house.

since ahonui's stroller was also in the trunk of our car, i thought it would be fun for both of us to walk together. so there i was, hand-in-hand with the little distracted monkey in tow. what would normally take a long-legged adult 15-20 minutes to walk from our apartment to pcc, it took ahonui and i 47 minutes! as much as i admired the little guy's ability to appreciate every part of nature from the crescent moon to the tiny blade of crab grass, my patience wore thin. it was adorably cute, yes. but after almost an hour of rock-fiddling...i was done. i didn't want to miss surprising brandon. so i ended up carrying our 30 lb., 17 month old half-way into our walk.

my arms were killing me by the time we got backstage. but what really mattered? brandon was extremely shocked to see ahonui's head pop into the musicians room...and the nature boy knocked out 5 minutes after we got home.

That is so cute! I'm so jealous that you can actually walk to your hubby's work -- so lucky you live LAIE. You are such a great mommy and wifey.

So cute how you guys surprised Brandon. And what a brilliant idea! Tire Ahonui out so he knocks out when he gets home. :) Kaehu and Sarai (and I'm guessing all toddlers) are the same way when we walk anywhere. They stop to see the bugs, the grass, the leaves, the rocks, the rubbish...LOL. Everything is interesting to kids, which is great because that means they're inquisitive and learning, but sometimes it can get tiresome when you're actually trying to get somewhere. Last week we went on this nature walk (FOREVER long) with our playgroup and I had to carry Kaehu the whole way going back (I forgot to pack the stroller). Talk about dying! My arms, my back, my feet. I'm preggers and I had to carry my son like a mile out in extreme HEAT, while Sarai day-dreamed and admired every little dew drop on the leaves along the way, which caused the walk back to be even longer. I thought I was gonna faint. LOL. Lesson learned: ALWAYS have my stroller at hand! :)

oh my goodness! he's huge! what a cute pic, harm. love the story - so cute. and no matter how hard and long it was to walk with a heavy baby. . .just remember, you were walking to PCC and you were walking in LAIE - that makes you one of the luckiest girls on earth in my book.

I love that story. I never would have thought it could take 47 minutes to get from your place to the PCC. Kids are awesome.

I hear ya...James is 22 lbs and is super heavy. I won't even walk to the creamery just in our parking lot without the stroller...just too heavy to carry!
