can you handle it?

i received a phone call from my mom today with some exciting news...andrew zimmern from bizzare foods on the travel channel wants to sample some of hawaii's "bizzare foods". growing up in hawaii, i never thought our authentic food was very strange. i mean, we're not eating things like scorpions or tarantulas. foreigners like andrew zimmern or his producers obviously think differently. anyway, they asked my mother's cousin, uncle vonn, to provide these strange edible hawaiian delicacies for an episode of the show.

since it is customary for hawaiians to celebrate their child's first birthday with an extravagant luau, the bizzare foods producers asked my uncle vonn if he knew of any hawaiian looking babies around the age of 1 to throw a first birthday party for...that's right, ahonui is scheduled to be the lucky just-turned-one-year-old-hawaiian-looking baby for the show. and he doesn't even know it yet.

uncle plans on making 'ake (raw liver), he'e (raw squid), raw crab - not sure what the hawaiian term for that is, vana (sea urchin), and of course, ahi poke (raw fish) my favorite! i suppose some would consider these to be pretty bizzare. but i don't think i could handle eating a tarantula. good luck, andrew.

stay tuned for airing info!
